I thought that I wasn't able to access the Internet last night because a known problem with our telephone service. As it turns out I forgot to plug the phone socket back in after the phone company asked me to do some tests.....DUH !!
Anyway. I decided to watch some TV for a change, and the only thing that wasn't mindless U.S dross was an Aussie documentary about 3 people who are dying of various things (mostly cancer) who are fighting for the right to end their lives with dignity.
The show was called Storyline Australia - Do Not Resusitate and it outlined the struggle these people are having in having common sense applied to their own lives, or in this case, death.
As Steven said, it's our own lives that are the issue here and it's others who make the decisions on whether we are able to die peacefully or suffer to the very end.
He also talked about an old dog he had which the vet quite happily gave a needle to in order to alleviate it's pain.
If we do it to be kind to animals because groups of people say so (RSPCA (excellent organisation) & Animal Rights activists (please...common-sense should apply here), why can't the same logic be applied with human beings.
This attitude, to me, suggests that animals need to be treated better than humans. Look out, here comes the other stuff !!!
The older I get, the more I realise that sensible attitudes, strong laws and basic common sense have all gone out the window.
We are all about catering to the minorities in the world and catering to religious bullshit that has totally fucked up the world. (Let's not get me started on religion !!!).
We all have to be considerate of the people we live on this planet no doubt, up to the point where they either refuse to do the same, or to where we take it too far.
There are so many examples of over-regulation stamping on common sense and it should stop.
My belief is that everyone has rights. It's basic. But if you expect to have rights, you must also accept responsibility for your own actions. If you refuse responsibility your rights no longer apply.
Of course, people, in some instances, are a product of their environment and upbringing and there's no doubt that it's hard, but please let's not blame everything else except our own ability to be aware of what we are doing.
There are plenty of people in the world who have had horrendous existences and have triumphed, and no, not everyone can do that, but everyone, except perhaps those with a proven uncontrollable illness, mental or otherwise have the ability to at least know when what they are doing is wrong at a common sense level and act accordingly.
The reason we are starting to take up the litigious attitude to everything is because, politicians and lawyers are allowing the world to say "It wasn't my fault" or "It upset me so that I can't (insert whatever you want to avoid doing) and I just can't function".
Toughen up for fucks sake. Grow a back-bone and for politicians and religious "leaders" (because so many are hypocritical paedophiles according to the press it seems), realise that if someone is in pain, or has formed the opinion early on that they want to choose to end their life on their own terms, THEN LET THEM.
Facilitate safe and common-sense approaches to the problem instead of exercising your egos and medieval dogma just so that you can seen to be something you're really not, or to make money or to make you feel good or what-ever other fucked up reason you have.

Yes, let's NOT get YOU started on religion seeing as how you know jack-shit about it! And let's be careful and not eat our own words about being "judgmental"!
The difference between euthanizing dogs and euthanizing humans is a no-brainer - anybody with a conscience that is not cracked right down the middle as yours appears to be would see that "ending one's pain" is absolute murder. PERIOD! God forbid you go to a hospital with a broken leg and they shoot your crazy ass! Here in the good ole U.S.A we call planning another persons death, premeditated murder! I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that is what the rest of the world calls it, too.
My brother-in-law has been semi-paralyzed for nearly 7-months due to suffering a catastrophic stroke in his brain stem...his liquid diet is pumped directly into his stomach by a tube; he cannot sit up or move much, therefore, he had a bed sore in his ass that you could put your hand in; he's had a staff infection for several months, has minimal use of his right arm and his legs are in these things that inflate and deflate because he hasn't been out of a hospital bed in SEVEN MONTHS - oh, and on top of all that...he has been a kidney dialysis patient 6-years before the stroke so he has to still be dialyzed and since all of his catheters have clogged everywhere they have placed them, they had to bore a hole into his ass to put a catheter directly into his iliac artery! But he can still communicate when he is not drugged-up on pain killers; and do you know what he says when they insert the talk box into his trachea?
"I DON'T WANT TO DIE!" The sad thing is that his will is stronger than his body...but his love for life is stronger yet! So since a dog cannot stand up and say "hey asshole, I want to live" and a dogs life is not as valuable as, oh...say, a humans life...we euthanize dogs.
So, I'm wondering...what cracked up planet are you from where dogs have feelings about death and human's ask to be killed? Do you honestly think that pain is what these people want to avoid? or maybe, is it LIVING that they want to avoid?...think about that Mr. Universe!
Before you go off half-cocked about what you think the world should think, maybe you should try to see the other perspective...the sane one would be a good choice.
nitey nite!
That was one of the most predictable responses I could have expected.
There are a couple of questions though:
How do you murder yourself?
If you're well it's called suicide, if you're terminally ill with no chance of recovery, it's called euthanasia.
You missed the point completely. This is personal choice not someone elses. If YOU don't want to do it, then die in which ever way you believe is right.
You hang on to life if you consider your life is going to be worth hanging on to. Your brother in law will obviously have a chance to recover and therefore be able to continue his life. If not, then his choice is to live.
For his, and his families sake, I hope he recovers fully and lives a long life.
Unfortunately Laureal, you have reacted without consideration of what I wrote.
I wandered towards common sense and over-regulation but that was a side issue of euthansia. Let's apply common sense when it comes to a persons ability to make a choice.
I wandered to religion because I hate it. It is the cause of all trouble in the world, and Laureal, I have experienced, first hand, the bull-shit that it preaches over an extended period of time and arrived at my opinions through choice and common sense.
As I've said, we're all entitled to an opinion, even you, despite the lack of brain function (that's thought) that goes with an opinion sometimes.
Oh, and don't get me started on tolerance ;-)
Jeez Laureal, lighten up. Perhaps you wouldn't fit into Australia quite as well as I thought.
You're far too serious about yourself to be able to fully appreciate what we have.
Live a full life with your own choices and be happy.
